Choosing Uplifting Music

3 Ways to Evaluate a Wedding Band

by Brent Rodriguez

If you've decided that you'd rather have live music at your upcoming wedding and reception than a DJ, your next step will be to identify a wedding band to hire. You'll want to evaluate what style of music you want at your wedding. While there are lots of bands that can play a wide range of pop hits, some people favor Celtic, swing, or other types of music. Once you've found a band that you may wish to hire, you need to thoroughly evaluate it so that you feel confident about your choice. Here are three ways you can effectively evaluate a wedding band.

1. Watch Online Videos

Start by watching online videos of the band's performances. Browse the band's website to look for a "Videos" option on the menu. Many bands have a selection of clips that prospective clients can view. If the band that you're considering doesn't have videos on its website, visit some popular video websites and search for the band's name. There's a good chance that someone has recorded the band at one of its past performances. This will allow you to watch some clips to get a feel for the band's music and vibe.

2. Seek Out a Live Performance

It's ideal if you can also watch the band live. This doesn't mean that you should attempt to attend a wedding at which the band is playing. In addition to their performances at weddings, many bands play at other venues. For example, a jazz band may play once a week or once a month at a local jazz bar in your city. Ask the band where you might be able to see it in action, and then make a plan to sit in on a live performance. They'll be entertaining your friends and family through more than music, so a live performance can help you know if their energy matches your wedding party.

3. Visit Review Sites

Another way that you can evaluate a wedding band before choosing to hire it is to look at online reviews. There are many different wedding websites that allow users to leave ratings and reviews for a wide range of wedding-related services, including bands, venues, bakeries, and more. Seeking out some of these sites to see what past clients are saying about the band that you're considering will help you to decide if it's the right one for you. Once you feel confident that you're making the right choice, you can move forward with hiring the band for your special day.
